The First Cut: Why I Treat Your Memories with a Strategy First
People are often nervous about handing over a box of clothes, whether it’s their own or a loved one’s. I completely understand that—these aren't just fabrics; they are memories. To help ease that transition, I want to share what my process looks like once those items enter my workspace.
By the time you hand over the clothes, we’ve already chatted about the "Why" (you can catch up on that in last week’s post!). Whether you have a specific vision or we’re browsing inspirational photos together, we start with a plan. I photograph your items and provide a digital proof based on our conversations.
I have a strict rule: I do not cut into any clothing until we have agreed upon the proof and the quote. I want to ensure you are 100% confident in the design and the cost before I start. In this business, there are no "undo" buttons once the scissors ( or rotary cutters) come out!
Once we have the green light, the technical work begins:
• The Prep: I begin by rough-cutting the clothing into single layers.
• Stabilization: I apply a high-quality woven stabilizer to the back of any knit materials (like t-shirts). This ensures the fabric doesn't stretch or warp over time but gives the quilt a beautiful drape.
• Quality Control: This is my most focused phase. I double-check every measurement against our proof. I invest in professional-grade rulers, rotary cutters, and fresh blades to ensure every cut is perfectly square and precise.
For me, this stage is about honoring the material. It’s where my "Marketing Brain" (the planning and proofing) meets my "Quilter’s Heart" (the careful, tactile work).
A question I often get is: 'What happens to the pieces you don't use?' I treat every remnant with respect. Before I start cutting, I give you the option to have all your remaining scraps returned to you, I can keep them in my quilting scrap bin for future uses such as charitable or community projects, or if you prefer I can ensure they are destroyed. You have all the say-so.
Do you have a box of memories waiting for a plan? I’d love to help you navigate the process from that first conversation to the final stitch. Let’s chat!
